🍬“anything” is the first track to be released from sugar plant’s forthcoming album, scheduled for release next spring. Warm, gently blurring guitars and soft, drifting synths create a dream-pop soundscape that quietly embraces the listener. Rather than chasing dramatic shifts, the song treasures subtle fluctuations and that floating sense of suspended time. While carrying the intimacy of their early works, sugar plant reveals a quietly renewed expression—proof that even 30 years after their debut, they continue to refine a sound that resonates with new listeners around the world.

In recent years, the band’s monthly listeners on Spotify have surpassed 70,000, drawing a growing audience of listeners in their 20s and 30s—especially in North America and Europe. 2016年にKiliKiliVillaからリリースされたUKパンク名曲カバー集『Rangers Patrol 1977~1982 UK!』以来、実に9年ぶりにINOKASHIRA RANGERSがKiliKiliVillaに帰ってきます。近年、ヨーロッパをはじめ世界中にコレクターを持つINOKASHIRA RANGERSが、今回新たに取り組むのは、なんとsugar plantの楽曲。
カバーされるのは、1998年リリースのsugar plantの名盤『happy』に収録された"happy"と、映画『ピンポン』のサウンドトラックにも使用されたことで知られる名曲"rise"の2曲。しかもボーカルにはオリジナルと同じく、sugar plantの本人が参加。この特別な企画により、原曲の持つ浮遊感やドリーミーな世界観と、井の頭レンジャーズならではの心地よいロックステディ／レゲエのグルーヴが融合する、唯一無二のサウンドが誕生します。
さらに、井の頭レンジャーズの“中の人”高木壮太は、実はsugar plantとも深い縁があります。1996年発表の『after after hours』から2000年の『dryfruit』まで、サポートメンバーとしてキーボードを担当。今回のコラボレーションは、そんな長年の音楽的な信頼関係があるからこそ実現したものです。

井の頭レンジャーズ
INOKASHIRA RANGERS（井の頭レンジャーズ）は、鍵盤奏者・高木壮太を中心に結成された日本のロックステディ／レゲエ・バンド。結成以来、70年代の黄金期ジャマイカン・サウンドをベースにしつつ、ロックステディ、スカ、レゲエといったルーツ・ミュージックのフォーマットで、独自のアレンジによるカバーを中心に活動を続けている。
その選曲センスとアレンジの妙は国内外の音楽好きを魅了し、これまでThe Jam、The Smiths、Blur、Nirvana、さらにはJoy DivisionやOasisといったUK／USロック・クラシックスから、日本の昭和歌謡、アニメソング、シティ・ポップまで、ジャンルや国境を越えた幅広い楽曲をレゲエやロックステディのスタイルでカバーし続けてきた。
2010年代には7インチ・アナログを中心にリリースを重ね、限られた枚数でプレスされた作品は日本のみならず海外でも高額で取引され、現在ではヨーロッパやアジアを中心に熱心なコレクターが存在する。その独自の活動スタイルと、ローカルから世界に広がるDIYスピリットは、インディー・シーンやレコード・カルチャーとも強くリンクしている。また、単なる懐古趣味やトリビュートでは終わらないのが井の頭レンジャーズの魅力。オリジナルを尊重しつつも、どこかユーモアや遊び心を感じさせるサウンド・アプローチは、クラブ・ミュージック世代や若いリスナーからも支持を集めている。

Nine years after their 2016 KiliKiliVilla release of UK punk covers on Rangers Patrol 1977–1982 UK!, INOKASHIRA RANGERS return to KiliKiliVilla. The band—beloved by collectors throughout Europe and beyond—now turns its attention to the work of sugar plant. They tackle two classics from sugar plant’s 1998 masterpiece happy: the wistful “happy” and “rise,” best known from the Ping-Pong film soundtrack. Once again, sugar plant herself takes the mic, merging the original’s ethereal, dreamy atmosphere with INOKASHIRA RANGERS’ signature rocksteady/reggae grooves to create a truly one-of-a-kind sound.

Furthermore, none other than Sōta Takagi—the very driving force behind INOKASHIRA RANGERS—actually shares a deep connection with sugar plant. From their 1996 release after after hours through 2000’s dryfruit, he served as a support keyboardist. It is precisely this long-standing musical trust that has made the current collaboration possible.

INOKASHIRA RANGERS
INOKASHIRA RANGERS are a Japanese rocksteady/reggae band led by keyboardist Sōta Takagi. Since their formation, they’ve built a repertoire of unique covers—rooted in the golden-era Jamaican sound of the ’70s—across rocksteady, ska, and reggae formats. Their inspired song choices and arrangements have captivated music lovers worldwide: from UK/US rock classics by The Jam, The Smiths, Blur, Nirvana, Joy Division, and Oasis, to Japanese Showa-era enka, anime songs, and city-pop—all reinterpreted in reggae and rocksteady style.

In the 2010s, they released a series of limited-press 7″ singles that quickly became collector’s items, fetching high prices not only in Japan but across Europe and Asia. Their DIY spirit and locally rooted yet globally resonant approach link them firmly to the indie scene and record-collecting culture. Yet INOKASHIRA RANGERS are never mere nostalgists: their respectful yet playful reinterpretations inject humor and charm that resonate with both club-music devotees and younger audiences alike.
